City police arrested eight teenagers on Wednesday in connection with the attack and murder of a doctor that took place on Tuesday at King George Hospital.
The defendants were identified as E. Vinay Kumar (21), A. Lokesh (22), A. Rajesh (21), E. Bhaskar (23), K. Ramesh (20), L. Lokeswara Rao (21), N. Naveen, 23 and D. Bhaskar aka Chinna Basha, 20, all from different parts of the city.
At a press conference here in town on Wednesday, Deputy Police Commissioner (Port Subdivision) Sireesha said all of the accused were reportedly drunk and allegedly the junior doctor Dr. C. Sridatha Prasad Reddy (29) had attacked postgraduate sophomores in the morgue of King George Hospital (KGH).
The defendant is said to have attacked the doctor with sharp blades in order to kill him. Dr. Prasad received severe bleeding injuries. This is an attempted assault to murder an officer, police said.
One Town Police Station inspector Venkata Narayana said the defendant was found to have attacked the doctor after refusing a request not to perform an autopsy on the deceased family member.
“Attacks on frontline warriors who served people during this pandemic are totally unacceptable. People involved in such crimes are punished severely according to the law, ”said ACP Sireesha.
Representatives from the AP Junior Doctor’s Association (AP JUDA) said Dr. Prasad Reddy, a doctoral student in forensic medicine, was on duty on Tuesday around 2 p.m. in the KGH morgue. Twelve people got into the morgue by huddling with the security guards and then attacked Dr. Reddy, who was doing an autopsy on another body.
Dr. Reddy sustained bleeding injuries to his face, nose, right eye, and other parts of the body.
“The students demand the arrest of all 12 defendants, otherwise they refuse to perform their duties. I appealed to the students to go back to their duties as the remaining people would also be arrested by the police, “said Dr. Mythili, superintendent The Hindu at Tuesday evening.
