Six other patients in SPSR Nellore district died of coronavirus within 24 hours, bringing the toll on the south coast of Andhra Pradesh to 1,509, despite more than 2,200 people developing the disease during the reporting period.
The number of active cases in the region rose to 42,586, with Prakasam affecting 24,877 cases and SPSR Nellore affecting 17,709 cases. Meanwhile, Prakasam District reported 1,295 new cases and Nellore 1,045, according to a bulletin released by the government on Sunday evening.
For the first time during the second wave of the pandemic, SPSR Nellore district saw more recoveries than new cases in the past 24 hours that ended at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday as the unremitting efforts of health professionals pay off. At least 1,410 patients recovered over the period in which 2,200 patients were treated in designated COVID hospitals and 964 more in COVID Care Centers (CCCs). The rest of the positive patients were treated at home.
In Prakasam, the number of recoveries was small as only 436 patients were discharged from the hospitals.
In light of the increase in cases of patients requiring oxygen therapy, Prakasam district collector Pola Bhaskar took steps to put a 160 bed German shed on warfoot. He said oxygen was guaranteed to over 80 beds.
The rest would be fitted with an oxygen concentration system, he said after reviewing the performance of the COVID control room set up at the Collectorate.
