Set the air conditioners to 26 ° C, says SECM

The State Energy Conservation Mission (SECM) suggested people set the temperature of their air conditioners to 26 degrees Celsius to reduce electricity consumption and help reduce much-needed greenhouse gas emissions.

In a press release, SECM CEO A. Chandra Sekhar Reddy said that the current annual electricity consumption of air conditioners is estimated to be 2,800 MU. If the AC temperature is set between 19-21 degrees, which is much lower than normal body temperature, there could be risks of hypothermia, skin allergy, or itching and high blood pressure, he said.

When an alternating current is operating at low temperatures, its compressor will continuously run at full energy and consume excess energy. The best way to run an AC power is to set it to a temperature of 26 ° C or more, which results in less power consumption. Even if five units of alternating current per night are saved by operating at 26 °, a saving of five million units of electricity per day in 10-lakh houses would be achieved.

Using 5 star AC would save 4.5 units per day compared to zero star AC. A 1-star split AC with a capacity of 1.50 tons would save £ 665 per year, while a 5-star AC would save about £ 2,500 compared to a zero-star AC.

In an online meeting on star rated devices, Energy Secretary N. Srikant said that reducing the AC temperature by one degree would reduce power consumption by 6%.

He observed that most people are in the habit of running their ACs at 20 to 22 degrees while the human body’s temperature tolerance is between 23 and 39 degrees.
