A 23-year-old woman died on Monday evening in Pithapuram, East Godavari district.
The deceased, identified as M. Lakshmi Sowjanya, was a resident of the city of Pithapuram and worked as a surveyor assistant in the Sea Tampuram Gram Secretariat.
According to Pithapuram police, the woman had informed her parents about their relationship two weeks ago. The parents agreed to speak to their boyfriend’s family about their marriage as soon as their probationary period ended in a few months.
However, on Monday evening, Sovietanya ended her life in her home. Her parents took her to the hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.
On Tuesday, police registered a case following a complaint from Sovietanya’s father alleging that his daughter took the extreme step after her boyfriend refused her marriage proposal.
An autopsy was performed at the Community Health Center in Pithapuram.
