TDP postpones NHRC over “atrocities” against Dalit

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) wrote a letter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday calling on them to send a team to Andhra Pradesh to conduct a full investigation into the alleged atrocities against Karakata Mallikarjun, a Dalit youth from Nellore district .

The national TDP general secretary and Politburo member Varla Ramaiah described Mr. Mallikarjun in the letter as a victim of the “hooliganism of the YSRCP” and the “violence of the police”.

He said that Mr. Mallikarjun was beaten up by thugs at the instigation of some YSRCP leaders. When Mr. Mallikarjun tried to run away, four thugs followed and attacked him. Later that day, Kodavalur police arrested him and recorded a false case against him and opened a noisy newspaper. Mr. Mallikarjun was released on bail the same day after people protested the police’s arrogance, said Mr. Ramaiah.

“Only a quick and immediate response from the NHRC can restore people’s confidence in the Constitution,” he said.
