Active cases fall below 9,500 in South Coastal AP

New infections and active cases continued to decline while recoveries improved in the south coast of Andhra Pradesh.

Up to four patients, including three in Prakasam district, succumbed to the viral disease in the area, which rose to 1,780 in the last 24 hours that ended at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Prakasam district accounted for 892 deaths and SPSR Nellore district for 888 deaths, according to a health bulletin published by the state government.

The number of active cases in the region fell to 9,400. Up to 600 people, including 213 in the SPSR Nellore district, have tested positive for the disease in the area, for a cumulative number in excess of 2.43 lakh. Up to 745 patients, including 306 in the Prakasam district, recovered on Sunday, bringing the total recovery to 2.32 lakh.

Concluding the nationwide special vaccination campaign in Ongole, State Health Minister Anil Kumar Singhal said the state health administration had modernized the facilities in the hospitals and procured the necessary drugs as part of the preparations to combat a possible third wave. The hospital infrastructure in the state has been further strengthened by spending 300 billion yen, he added.

In the Prakasam district, more than 91,000 people were vaccinated on Sunday, said J. Ratnavalli, district doctor for medicine and health. In the SPSR Nellore district, health workers vaccinated over 77,000 people late into the night, said DMHO S. Rajyalakshmi.
