Ganja, liquor, tobacco products worth ₹ 52 lakh confiscated, 10 detained

Chittoor police on Thursday seized huge amounts of ganja, Karnataka-made liquor and banned chewing tobacco products valued at around 52 lakh and arrested 10 people in raids at three different locations in Tavanampalle Mandal. Three delivery vans, a baggage rickshaw and two motorcycles were also confiscated.

Police Deputy Superintendent (Law and Order) N. Sudhakar Reddy told the media that with the rise in smuggling activities of ganja, liquor and banned tobacco products across the Chittoor-Karnataka border, special parties have been formed and surveillance has been increased at the suspicious transit points .

During the past 24 hours, the special forces raided Patrapalle Cross, Gajulapalle village and LN Puram in the Tavanampalle mandal and seized contraband that the accused were attempting to transport by highways after exiting the Bengaluru National Road in Bangarupalem had.

“We have information that there are three gangs operating in the Chittoor district. Allegedly they procured ganja, liquor bottles and tobacco products from Karnataka and smuggled them to Chittoor. A thorough investigation is underway and the rest of the gang members would soon be arrested, ”the DSP said.

Police Superintendent S. Senthil Kumar had formed special teams to contain the growing threat from youth becoming addicted to ganja. “Aside from advising the youth, we will step up the vigil against the gangs that are involved in such illegal activities,” he said.

All the defendants from Bangarupalem, Tavanampalle, GD Nellore and Tirupati were taken into custody.
