Liquor receipts fell in line with the government. Politics says Dy CM

Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Business Tax and Excise Tax K. Narayana Swamy said the state raised 44,178.51 billion yen in GST in fiscal year 2020-21 and a target of 55,935.13 billion yen for the current fiscal year 2021-22 has been established.

In a press release, Mr Narayana Swamy said the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted government revenues. In a special campaign between October 2020 and March 2021, the government collected outstanding taxes amounting to 1,772 billion yen. He said the state’s trade tax office ranks fourth in the country.

Regarding revenue from liquor sales, Mr Narayana Swamy said the state’s VAT collection on spirits was 41% lower in FY 2020-21 compared to the previous fiscal year.

He said the state levied 10,403.84 billion yen in sales tax on liquor in 2019-20, and decreased it to 6,161.43 billion yen in 2020-21.

Mr Narayana Swamy said this was in line with government policy on phasing out alcohol. He said the decline in liquor sales suggested the government’s initiatives were bearing fruit.
