Police identify bodies in Godavari

The three siblings allegedly jumped into the river and could not bear their mother’s death

Three bodies found in Godavari on June 1 were identified Tuesday by Rajamahendravaram police as siblings who ended their lives in a state of depression following the death of their mother.

The deceased were identified as Maamidipalli Kannadevi, 34, Nagamani, 32, and Durga Rao, 29, from the city of Kovvuru in West Godavari District. All were unmarried. Their last rites were performed by the police on June 3rd after no one showed up to retrieve the bodies.

Her mother Manikyam died here on May 31st after a long illness in the district hospital. None of her relatives, except family members, are said to have attended her funeral for fear of COVID.

Police said video footage showed the three siblings sent their father home and later jumped into the river. The bodies of the trio were found on June 1st on the banks of the Godavari in Rajamahendravaram. The police performed the final rites after no one had picked up the bodies for three days. “The identity of the deceased was determined on Tuesday,” said a police officer.
