Naidu urges governor to protect frontline workers

National President of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), N. Chandrababu Naidu, accused state police of harassing frontline workers and the public in the name of enforcing restrictions to contain coronavirus infection, and urged Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan to participate in the Intervene in the matter.

Mr. Naidu alleged in a letter to the governor on Tuesday that police harassed Lakshmi Aparna, a Dalit who works in a private hospital in Visakhapatnam, when she returned home that evening during curfew. “The police intercepted Ms. Aparna near Rama Talkies and subjected her to inappropriate harassment,” he said4.

The President of the TDP further alleged that some police officers were grossly violating the constitutional rights of citizens. “Frontline fighters, opposition leaders, the general public, especially Dalits, are harassed and persecuted by the police. So far, however, no action has been taken against the erring staff, ”he said.

All segments of society are struggling during the pandemic and need friendly police rather than meaningless harassment during this trial period. “The situation warrants intervention by the governor and tough measures must be taken against the erring officials,” added Mr. Naidu.
