15 month old child is operated on for black fungal infection

Doctors at Government General Hospital (GGH), Kakinada, performed functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) on a 15 month old boy, A. Janaki Nandan, who had mucormycosis (black fungus).

Janaki Nandan comes from the village of Penugonda in the West Godavari district and was accepted into the GGH a week ago. “On June 3rd, the GGH doctors performed the operation. Janaki Nandan is out of danger and recovering from the infection. He is believed to be the youngest boy to undergo the FESS black mushroom operation in the country according to government records, ”East Godavari collector D. Muralidhar Reddy said Monday.

State of the art facility

Mr Muralidhar Reddy told the GGH that Kakinada was equipped with the state-of-the-art medical infrastructure and expertise to treat mucormycosis (black fungus) patients.

As of Monday, 92 patients with black fungus were being treated in the GGH and the doctors have operated on 21 patients so far.

Of the 92 patients, 73 were infected with the black fungus after recovering from COVID-19. “To date, up to 152 black fungus patients from East and West Godavari districts have been admitted to the GGH, Kakinada,” said Muralidhar Reddy.

Health Minister Alla Kali Krishna Srinivas and Mr. Muralidhar Reddy recognized the efforts of the doctors from GGH-Kakinada for the successful operation. Those who have black yeast infection can take the test on the GGH, Kakinada.
