AP’s energy needs increase by 8% in May

Andhra Pradesh’s energy demand rose 8% m / m in May due to the Increase in Covid cases versus a 14% drop nationally, according to an official release saying that in meeting demand through various measures, including sourcing from the spot markets, emphasis has been placed on providing uninterruptible power supplies, particularly to hospitals.

The demand, which was 4,364 million units (ME) in May 2020, reached 4,724 ME in the corresponding month of this year. On the flip side, utilities have spent around Rs 3,763 billion on new lines and substations, which helped them reduce utility disruptions by 74%.

In addition, the government attached particular importance to increasing the generation capacity for renewable energies (RE). The installed capacity increased from 3,029 MW in 2021 to 3,800 MW 2018-19.

The government is also working on a plan to build 33.70 GW of pumped storage projects and ultra-mega-renewable energy parks to achieve self-sufficiency in the electricity sector and export electricity to other states.

In a review meeting on Wednesday June 2, 2021, Energy Secretary N. Srikant admonished officials to strive to make the state the No. 1 in cost-efficient energy. He sought the cooperation of the district collectors in solving all problems that hinder the power supply. Minister Balinivasa Reddy said the government had made electricity supply a top priority and had taken all necessary steps to achieve the goal.
