A man killed in the demolition of a quarry in Chittoor

A 25-year-old youth was killed on the spot after being hit in the head by part of a boulder from a quarry while workers blew up a rock with gelatin pens on Ankalamma Hill in Chowdepalle Mandal on Saturday.

Police identified the deceased as Jakir, who is from Uturu Village in Chowdepalle Mandal. The deceased was a daily bet who worked in a mango orchard and was adjacent to the quarry in a hilly area.

The operators of the quarry had told the mango plantation owners that they should load the stocks by the afternoon so that they could start the blasting work. Jakir had loaded the mangoes into a trailer and was on his way to the road point, which was half a kilometer from the quarry, when a sudden explosion followed and hit him off a boulder.

A police officer who rushed to the scene confirmed that no one except Jakir was injured in the incident.

“We booked an IPC Section 304 (A) case against a mallesh who works as a quarry overseer. A preliminary detail is that he set off the explosion without a permit or license. We are checking the documents to determine the ownership of the quarry, ”said a police officer.
