COVID-19 | Active cases exceed 42,000 in South Coastal Andhra

There was no relief for people with coronavirus on the south coast of Andhra Pradesh as 19 more patients succumbed to the infection while 2,542 people contracted the disease within 24 hours.

For the first time in the second wave of the pandemic, the two districts reported a total of 19 deaths (10 in Prakasam and 9 in SPSR Nellore) in 24 hours, bringing a toll of 1,490 in the region. Meanwhile, the recovery rate fell to a new low of 79.04%.

With over 2,000 cases per day in the past few days, the number of active cases exceeded the 42,000 mark in the region. On Friday, 1,296 people in Prakasam district and an additional 1,246 people in SPSR Nellore district tested positive for the disease in the last 24 hours that ended at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. This emerges from a health bulletin published by the state government on Friday evening. The total number of coronavirus cases thus exceeded the 2.07 lakh mark.

Pressure on health professionals increased as more people rushed to certain hospitals in critical condition.

New infections exceeded recovery by over 700 as only 1,320 patients in Nellore district and 484 patients in Prakasam district were cured of the disease.
