Translocation of 49 old trees in full swing in the town of Kakinada

Relocation of at least 49 trees that are three decades old is in full swing to preserve them, rather than preventing new buildings from being built on the campus of the Kakinada Municipal Corporation office in the East Godavari district.

Launched on May 19 on a pilot basis, the initiative is under the auspices of Kakinada Smart City Corporation Limited (KSCCL).

The authorities at Kakinada Smart City Corporation Limited engaged the Visakhapatnam-based Balaji Nursery to relocate the 49 trees identified.

Swapnil Dinakar, commissioner of the Kakinada Municipal Corporation (KMC), said The Hindu on Friday; “We have decided not to cut down the old trees for planned development work in the city. We will commit not to cut down trees for development work if the relocation initiative is successful.”

The translocation of certain tree species resulted in at least 90% of the survival of the earlier attempts in the cities of Tirupati and Visakhapatnam.

“It has been found that the species in the 49 trees will survive the translocation if timely attention is given for two months. All trees have been uprooted and are now in the biological treatment stage to their roots, ”said Swapnil.

The trees are being preserved in the school area of Akshara in the city, where they will be replanted on both sides of the road.

Kakinada Municipal Corporation’s Superintendent Engineer, PVV Satyanarayana Rao, and Deputy Director of Horticulture, Veera Cyril, oversee the exercise.
