Covishield costs £ 300 per dose and Covaxin £ 400, government. says HC

The state government briefed the High Court on Monday through a memo of steps to contain the spread of the coronavirus ordered by Bharat Biotech and the Serum Institute of India under the liberalized pricing and accelerated COVID-19 national vaccination policy announced by the center Deliver 50% of their production to the center at £ 150 per dose, with half of the balance to be delivered to states and the other half to private actors.

Although no price was set for delivery to the states, the center stated in its affidavit filed with the Supreme Court that it had “informal consultations” with manufacturers decided that both manufacturers should provide vaccines to each state in a consistent manner. So while Covishield is available to the States for £ 300 per dose, Covaxin costs £ 400 per dose.

C. Sumon, the government’s special envoy in the attorney general’s office, mentioned in the memo that it was in this context that Prime Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow other manufacturers to manufacture vaccines in order to meet the growing demand citing the powers of the center according to the patent law.

Attorneys V. Ashok Ram and GR Sudhakar, who appeared on behalf of the petitioners, made their case on the state’s difficulties in obtaining adequate supplies of oxygen and remdesivir injections and the need for urgent remedial action.

Mr Sumon said the state allocation had increased from 480 tons on May 8 to just 590 tons, despite writing to the center for an allocation of 800 tons of oxygen. In view of the high fall load, the Chief Minister tried to increase the oxygen distribution to 910 tons. He also asked for an additional allocation of 20 liquid oxygen tankers and eight LNG tankers converted to carry liquid medical oxygen, as well as an equal number of cryogenic tankers. The number of COVID-reported hospitals has increased to 650 from 47,032 beds, and the state has 110 Covid Care Centers with 50,027 beds as of May 14.
