10 dead in an explosion in the limestone quarry in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh

The accident happened while unloading gelatins.

Ten workers were killed in an explosion in a limestone quarry in the village of Mamillapalle, Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh on Saturday when gelatin sticks were unloaded from a truck.

While the bodies of six day laborers were found, the police tried to verify the identity of the other victims on the basis of the remains on the construction site.

According to information, there were about two dozen workers on the site at the time of the accident, which was reportedly due to a gelatin stick hitting the truck.

The impact was such that body parts were scattered over a radius of half a kilometer. The toll should go up as teams were formed to identify and collect the body parts.

Rescue operations have been delayed because the accident site is in a remote area, local residents said. Those with moderate injuries were taken to hospitals in Badvel. A senior police officer who rushed to the scene said rescue operations had become difficult because the quarry was in rough terrain surrounded by hills and forest areas in Kadapa, Kurnool and Prakasam districts.

Police superintendent Kadapa told KKN Anburajan The Hindu that they had received a complaint that 10 workers were killed. The police have found six bodies so far and the fate of the other victims is being sought. “Our staff rushed to the scene and the investigation into the accident has begun,” he said.

The SP said that according to preliminary information, the limestone quarries in Kalasapadu Mandal had all valid permits. “However, we will look into the details to establish the facts,” Anburajan said.

Another senior police officer said the rescue operation had become difficult because the quarry was hidden in rough terrain surrounded by hills and forest areas in Kadapa, Kurnool and Prakasam districts.
