    Dear Reader,

There’s no news but bad news. Corona continues to glide around killing thousands and infecting lakhs every day in India. However, while the numbers blur and stop making sense, it is important to take a break from all the gloom and doom. First on our list this weekend is a compilation of what went viral, and what will make you smile. Head over to the section for some – albeit short-lived – joy.

From the kitchen, we have a recipe of Rava Kesari today. Taking in calories also means shedding them, and what better than yoga to do so. Take a leaf out of Malaika Arora’s yoga guide to get on that path. Mandira Bedi can help give your mind some ‘shanti’.

For some a-shanti, pick up Edward Snowden’s book Permanent Record. The former CIA agent’s well-known book provides you an insight into the workings of the US government. The US isn’t very happy about it, as you might know.

From the US to India. In Mumbai, Salman Khan is helping out the Hindi film industry’s daily-wage workers with money transfers. Several Bollywood celebs have also risen to the occasion and are doing their bit for the country while we fight Covid.

Salman, meanwhile, will be back on screen this Thursday. Radhe Your Most Wanted Bhai arrives on OTT. This is the first Salman Khan movie since December 2019’s Dabangg 3 and the excitement among his fans is understandably high.

That’s all from us this week. Stay home, stay safe. Keep those masks on.

    Here’s Your Weekend Planner.

    WHAT’S TRENDING?

Lock yourself up at home. Step out only if necessary and do not forget the mask and sanitiser. You must be tired of hearing this by now but you don’t really have an option, do you? In a new global record, India recorded over 4 lakh cases on Saturday and although there was a slight dip in the numbers thereafter, Thursday witnessed a new high of 4,12,262 new Covid cases and 3,980 deaths.

Are we looking at a nationwide lockdown soon? Well, in a press briefing on Wednesday, Niti Aayog’s member VK Paul said that the option is “being discussed”.

In support of India, Pakistani artists including singers Zeeshan Ali and Nauman Ali performed a soulful rendition of AR Rahman’s iconic 2009 song Arziyan. The video went viral as Twitter smiled for a moment.

Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky also went viral this week after the couple danced to Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive. We loved the video and you must watch it too.

Baba Sehgal, in the meantime, spread Covid awareness as he recreated Boney M’s 1978 hit song Rasputin and released the Hindi version of the track, and named it Protein.

In a heartwarming update from Kolkata, an elderly woman embraced her doctor after recovering from Covid-19. She was rather emotional as pictures went viral.

Also, something strange happened as a couple exchanged varmala or garlands during their socially-distanced wedding ceremony using bamboo sticks. Strange, but true.

So, to round off this section, if you want to know what’s trending, Mumbai Police has the best answer to the question. It’s double masking. Here you go.

    SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMILE

Have you seen this video of a woman teaching her pet puppies to pray before their meal? It’s just so cute and we couldn’t help but watch it on loop.

The internet also enjoyed this video of a little girl using an umbrella to save a dog from getting drenched in the rain. Must watch.

    DON’T FORGET TO WORK OUT

Amid the rise in Covid cases, apart from staying indoors and eating healthy to boost immunity, it is also necessary to pack in a few moments for working out in our daily routine. Milind Soman took to Instagram this week to stress on the same. He shared a video of himself exercising on a pull-up bar in the jungle and said that inactivity can encourage disease.

While Milind stressed on physical exercises, Mandira Bedi revealed what helps her attain ‘shanti’. According to the actress, all inverted yoga poses help her beat anxiety. She even posted a video of herself doing a headstand.

Malaika Arora, Bollywood’s fitness diva, posted a video teaching her followers how to do Anulom Vilom Pranayama. She said that this yoga asana helps in improving lung capacity.

This week, we also got in touch with a few medical experts to ask them if it is okay to go outdoors for a walk. If you had this question in mind, don’t worry, because doctors answered it. Also, if you have recovered from Covid-19, and cannot wait to resume your fitness sessions, you might consider reading this.

BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY TO FIGHT COVID

    Watermelon cooler

As part of our immunity series where we recommend recipes that you can easily prepare at home, this week, we have nutri kebabs, watermelon cooler with tulsi and aloe vera, ajwain and jeera herbal tea and saunf, jeera and methi powder.

We also have a kadha recipe made with turmeric, tulsi leaves, cinnamon, fresh ginger, clove and black pepper.

    ON YOUR PLATTER

The need of the hour is to stay at home and be safe to stop the further spread of Covid-19. But it is also important to engage ourselves in activities of positive influence, so that we don’t feel anxious being indoors all the time. And what could be better than cooking?

This week, we have the recipe of Rava Kesari for you that you can easily make at home and satiate your sweet cravings.

    HOW TO MAKE RAVA KESARI?

    Rava Kesari

To make this sweet dish, in a thick-bottomed pan, take 6 tablespoons of ghee. Add a handful of cashew nuts in it and fry till they turn golden. Remove the cashews from the oil and add 1 tablespoon of raisins in the hot ghee. As soon as the raisins become plump, remove them. Now, reduce the flame and add 1 cup of fine rava to the ghee. Keep stirring and roast it on medium-low flame.

Now, in a large pan, boil 1 cup of water. Add the roasted rava into it and stir continuously till the rava absorbs water and no lumps are formed. Add 3/4 cup sugar to the mixture and stir on low flame.

In another bowl, soak few threads of saffron in 2 tablespoons of warm water for 15 minutes. Add this saffron water to the rava. Finally, make sure the mixture is combined well and no lumps are present. Cover and simmer for 2 minutes or till rava gets cooked completely. In the end, add the roasted cashews, raisins and mix well. Serve.

    FROM THE BOOKSHELF

    Permanent Record by Edward Snowden

    Permanent Record by Edward Snowden

You are being watched. Edward Snowden, a former CIA agent, made us realise this in 2013 when he leaked highly classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA). In 2019, he released his autobiography, titled Permanent Record, which revealed intimate details of his life and how he risked everything to blow the whistle on the United States government. The book also gives an insight into how the US government keeps track of people around the world. If you have watched the film Snowden on Netflix and have been curious about the global debate on mass surveillance, this book is a must-read for you.

    FASHIONABLY YOURS

    Deepika Padukone in Piku

Deepika Padukone’s Piku released six years ago on May 8, 2015, and it still remains the film that got everyday fashion right for the modern Indian woman. Apart from its brilliant and heart-stirring storyline, Piku also caught the audience’s attention with its relatable fashion. The way Piku combined the modern Delhi girl’s style with Bengali accents – subtle black, white and red hues in neo-ethnic ensembles like kurta, palazzos, sarees – still makes the film one of the most incredibly fashion-forward movies. On our Fashion Friday section this week.

    MOVIES AND MAGIC

Salman Khan and the makers of his upcoming film Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai have decided to donate the revenue from the film for Covid-19 relief. Salman Khan Films, the actor’s production house, and entertainment company Zee, have partnered with GiveIndia for the relief work. The donation will help procure medical equipment such as oxygen cylinders, concentrators and ventilators. Fulfilling their promise to release the film on Eid, the makers have decided to go ahead despite rising Covid-19 cases in the country.

Meanwhile, the title track of Radhe was released recently which gave Salman Khan fans a major throwback to the actor’s 2009 film Wanted. In the video, Salman is seen grooving with Disha Patani.

While there were no major releases this week, we revisited some classics. For Monday Masala, we rewatched Emraan Hashmi and Esha Gupta’s Jannat 2 and fell in love with its songs all over again. On Tuesday Trivia, we revealed that Vijay Deverakonda was not the first choice for the titular role in Arjun Reddy. Wahiyat Wednesday was about Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted, which is classified as a hollow 3D experience. On Throwback Thursday, we recalled how Jennifer Aniston almost didn’t return for Friends last season.
