Former PCC President Satyanarayana Rao dies

MSR, as it was popularly known, was a strong proponent of the Telangana movement.

Former President of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) and senior congress leader M. Satyanarayana Rao took his last breath in town on April 27 due to age-related problems. He was sick for a while.

The 88-year-old former MP, popularly known as MSR, is survived by his wife, two daughters and two sons. MSR comes from the village of Vedira in the Ramadugu mandal of the Karimnagar district and has been elected three times MP.

He took part in the Telangana movement in 1969 and was elected to parliament with the Telangana Praja Samiti ticket. He was later elected twice on behalf of the Congress Party. MSR has been a strong advocate of Telangana even in the new millennium.

MSR was PCC President in the combined Andhra Pradesh from 2000 to 2004. From 2004 to 2007 he also served in YS Rajashekhar Reddy’s cabinet and from 2007 as chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).

His provocation of the chief of Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and Karimnagar MP K. Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR) to resign to prove the popularity of the Telangana feeling is seen as a key moment in the Telangana movement. When KCR responded to the challenge, he resigned and denied again. KCR won by a large majority and gave a boost to Telangana agitation, which was then considered to be in decline.

Telangana PCC President N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, Senior Congress Directors Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Ponnam Prabhakar, K. Jana Reddy and KVP Ramchander Rao have endorsed MSR’s death and recalled his service to the Telangana cause.

Prime Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao mourned the death and said MSR was a straightforward man with his own political style. Andhra Pradesh’s Prime Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy and TDP leader N. Chandrababu Naidu also expressed their condolences to the bereaved family.
