Guntur Police bust cricketbetting gang, three held

Guntur (Urban) District Police’s Nagarampalem Police have arrested three people charged with betting on cricket games and confiscated a car, £ 12 in cash, six cell phones and other materials.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) RN Ammireddy told journalists in Guntur on Sunday, saying a team led by Shaik Moula Shariff had searched a deserted area near the old Zilla Parishad area and Potla Srinivas Rao following a lead , Kantheti, arrested Surya Teja and Shaik Nagulmeera Vali, all natives of Guntur District.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Srinivas, a professional realtor, had jailed Surya Teja, a chartered accountant, and Nagulmeera, who worked with lead accused Srinivas, for £ 12,000 a month to raise money to give to punters.

The gang bet on the ongoing IPL games. The defendant’s bank accounts are being checked, the SP said.

Srinivas, his accomplice Surya Teja, and two other Rehan and Sai reportedly planned to kill Nagulmeera as there was a £ 37 difference in the amount earned through betting. The four people allegedly kidnapped the employee and beat him up in Brundavan Gardens, Ammireddy said.

A case under sections 363 (kidnapping), 307 (attempted murder) of the IPC and under sections 3 and 4 of the Andhra Pradesh Gaming Act has been recorded. The SP is trying to capture the remaining two members of the gang, the SP added.
