The GVMC engineer has called for £ 34,000 in bribes

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials arrested an officer from the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) on Thursday for allegedly demanding and accepting a £ 34,000 bribe from a contractor for doing an official favor here on Thursday.

The arrested officer was identified as UV Venkat Rao, Zone VIII executive engineer.

According to the ACB officials, a contractor, R. Appala Naidu, approached them and complained that Venkat Rao was demanding £ 34,000 as a reward for paying £ 34 worth of bills for sewer work in Ward 70.

Following the complaint, the ACB officials established facts and set a trap. At around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, officer Venkat Rao was caught red-handed in his office chambers demanding and accepting the £ 34,000 bribe. The suspect was arrested and will be brought before the Special Tribunal for SPE and ACB Cases in Visakhapatnam on Friday.

The case is being investigated further.
