Chittoor sees 5 deaths, 1,885 cases a day

Curfew from 10pm to 5am starting today

Chittoor district recorded five coronavirus deaths on Friday and a whopping one-day COVID-19 infection count of 1,885, the highest among districts after the lockdown. With the new cases, the active cases shot up to 1.1356.

The district police are preparing to contain the curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Saturday. The police officers in the Satyavedu, Nagari, Karveti Nagaram, Chittoor, Palamaner and Kuppam counties, which border Tamil Nadu, and the Madanapalle and Punganur counties bordering Karnataka have intensified their monitoring of public transport on the interstate routes.

Police superintendent S. Senthil Kumar said the top priority would be to get those traveling on the public transport system to wear masks, otherwise a fine would be imposed.

Random inspection

The SP appealed to the elderly and those with comorbid conditions to avoid travel unless it was an emergency.

“Random inspections are conducted in public places to verify compliance with COVID protocols, which are strictly followed in shopping malls, supermarkets and movie theaters to prevent congestion and violation of social distancing norms,” said Senthil Kumar.

Meanwhile, COVID Task Force officials visiting public places regretted that despite raising awareness about wearing masks, COVID norms such as social distancing were grossly violated by weekly shandies in rural and semi-urban areas.
