In one major catch, district police arrested two people on Wednesday while allegedly transporting 1,200 kg of ganja in a truck near the Paderu area here in the district.
Although the seized ganja in the agency areas of Visakhapatnam district is estimated to be around 40 lakh, in some states it is estimated to be over 1 crore.
According to the district police, the smugglers obtained the ganja from the inner parts of Jolaputtu in the Munchingputtu mandal and drove towards Paderu. A team led by Paderu Sub-Inspector M. Sreenivas raided and searched the vehicle near Ambedkar Junction in Paderu.
To escape the police, the smugglers tried to move the ganja under a load of turmeric sacks, the police said. Cases have been posted and an investigation is ongoing.
