Motorized boats anchored at the start of the fishing vacation

When the 61-day closed season came into effect on Thursday, the fishermen anchored their mechanized and motorized boats in the 69 landing centers on the ten coastal mandals in the Prakasam district.

Fishing operations with mechanized and motorized boats in the Bay of Bengal off the 106 km long coast of Prakasam are prohibited until June 14th in order to conserve fish and other marine resources during the breeding season.

The ban is enforced annually so that fishermen can get a good catch during the monsoon season, said joint fisheries director A.Chandrasekhar Reddy The Hindu on Sunday, while the process of anchoring fishing boats on the coast of Kothapatnam is being monitored.

On April 19, officials prepare for a full enumeration to identify families for providing financial compensation in the coastal mandals of Ongole, Kothapatnam, Chirala, Vetapalem, Chinnaganjam, Nagulapapadu, Tangutur, Singarayakonda, Ulavapadu and Gudluru.

Meanwhile, a private weather service company’s assessment of the 2021 monsoon to be “normal” on Tuesday earned applause from the fishermen.

“We can expect a good catch when the close season ends thanks to the forecast of a healthy monsoon,” said a fisherman Prabhu Prakash Naidu in Kothapatnam Pallepalem in a conversation with The Hindu.

Owners of motorized and mechanized boats as well as fishermen who practice traditional crafts should appear in person next Monday for enumeration. Last year up to 12,229 fishermen received £ 10,000 support. Even those who use farm handicrafts received financial assistance although they could go fishing during the embargo, the official said.

Meanwhile, fishermen urged the state government to increase financial support in line with inflation, and also to increase subsidies on diesel, which had recently gotten out of reach as a result of the sharp rise in fuel prices.
