Vaccine shortage dampens ‘Tika Utsav’

The intensity of the coronavirus on the south coast of Andhra Pradesh, where 405 people contracted the viral disease, did not decrease, while two more contracted it within 24 hours. This included 190 cases in SPSR Nellore district and 215 in Prakasam district.

The toll in the region rose to 1,110 as one person each died of a pandemic in Nellore and Prakasam districts, a health bulletin published by the state government on Sunday said. Up to 99 patients, including 38 in the Prakasam district, were discharged after recovery during the reporting period.

Meanwhile, ‘Tikka Utsav’, a four-day vaccination festival to vaccinate as many people as possible, in SPSR Nellore and Prakasam districts, proved to be a reluctant proposition as health officials announced they had run out of supplies.

“We are now out of inventory in the two districts,” said health officials, concerned about the number of active cases in the region, which rose to 2,961 and raised the cumulative COVID cases to 1.28,748. On the first day of ‘Tika Utsav’, Prakasam vaccinated just over 1,000 people, while Nellore’s numbers are not yet available.

It should be noted that since the vaccination campaign began on January 16, up to 5.41 lakh beneficiaries have been vaccinated in the region, including 2.85 lakh in the Nellore district.

“Nellore may be the first district in the country to fully utilize all of its vaccine inventory,” said joint collector (health) N. Prabhkar Reddy The Hindu. The county government has requested that six lakh doses of vaccine be replenished, Nellore County Medical and Health Officer S. Rajyalakshmi said while taking stock of the health situation in the county.

In Prakasam, too, the district administration was exhausted on Sunday, said the district doctor for medicine and health, Fr. Ratnavalli. “We’re waiting for the stock to continue,” she said. So far, 2.56 lakh people have been vaccinated in the district, with 1,221 active cases on Sunday.
