The district has registered 298 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 63,894 as of Wednesday morning.
Wednesday’s number was the highest daily count reported this year and also the highest in the past six months. The district has had the third-highest single-day balance in the state in the past 24 hours after Guntur (368) and Krishna (327).
The death toll from COVID-19 rose to 553 with another fatality, the seventh death reported this month. The last 13 COVID-19 deaths were reported within 16 days.
With 169 people recovering, the total number of recoveries rose to 61,394. The number of active cases rose to 1,902.
Collector takes stock
Collector V. Vinay Chand held a meeting here on Wednesday with officials from the Ministry of Health, as well as with heads of various hospitals offering treatments for COVID-19 patients.
The collector urged health officials to be on their toes after the rising number of COVID-19 cases. He inquired about bed inventory, drug availability, ambulances, oxygen supplies, patient food, help desks, laboratory tests, and power supplies.
He directed the coordinator for hospitals, Dr. Lakshmana Rao, to visit all hospitals and check the precautions. The collector also asked officials to set up help desks in all hospitals. Doctors from King George Hospital (KGH), Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), and Government Hospital for Breast and Communicable Diseases (GHCCD) attended.
