Relay hunger strike started for Visakhapatnam steel mill

On Friday, representatives of various unions started a relay hunger strike against the privatization of the Visakhapatnam steelworks (VSP) in the Gandhi statue near GVMC.

The union leaders said VSP had sales of 18,000 crore this year despite the pandemic. The interest on loans from banks was also paid. They wondered what drove the center to privatize the facility. The center has no right to transfer power supplies to corporate units.

They said that a beach walk would be organized on April 4th and a hunger strike on April 18th with the participation of the public and farmers. They also demanded that the state government also put pressure on the center to withdraw its decision to privatize VSP.

The union leaders had previously decorated the statue of Mahatma Gandhi with garlands and put up slogans against privatization and the continuation of the VSP in the public sector. They also brought up slogans of ‘Visakha Ukku – Andhrula Hakku’.
