Left parties condemn attacks on civil rights activists

The CPI (M) Greater Visakha City Committee and the party’s district committee on Thursday condemned the raids carried out by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on the residences of civil rights leaders in Visakhapatnam and elsewhere in Andhra Pradesh.

In separate statements released on Thursday, City Committee Secretary B. Ganga Rao and District Secretary K. Lokanadham stated that the raids on the homes of civil rights activists and lawyers K. Padma and KS Chalam were “illegal” were calling for an immediate stop to the raids. They alleged that false cases had been brought against those who questioned the centre’s policies since the BJP came to power.

“The raids are carried out by central authorities without the prior approval of the state government concerned. This is against the federal spirit of the Constitution, ”they said.
