Nilam Sawhney takes over the office of Andhra SEC

She is the first female election commissioner for Andhra Pradesh.

Retired bureaucrat Nilam Sawhney took over as election commissioner for Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. She was General Secretary of Andhra Pradesh until December 2020.

The state government sent names of three retired IAS officials to Governor Biswa Bushan Harichandan. The governor appointed Ms. Sawhney to the SEC.

Ms. Sawhney, a 1984 batch IAS officer from the Andhra Pradesh Cadre, was due to superannuate on June 30, 2020 but was given an extension as chief secretary. She was the first female boss in AP. Now she will be the first SEC woman.

Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar, who served as the SEC until March 31, 2021, became the AP’s first SEC following state fork in 2014. The state government removed him from office in the medium term and appointed Justice Kanagaraj in his place.

However, the High Court overturned the state government’s order and restored Mr. Kumar as SEC. After the appointment of Justice Kanagaraj and the subsequent restoration of Mr. Kumar’s post, Ms. Sawhney will serve as the fourth SEC.
