Book published on children’s right to education

A book on children’s right to education, written by DVR Murthy, head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Andhra University, was published in the University’s Journalism Department on Thursday.

The book is entitled “Children’s Right to Free and Compulsory Education”.

“April 1st is a historic day in the country’s education movement. On that day in 2009, the Right to Free and Compulsory Education or the Right to Education Law of 2009 came into force, ”said Prof. Murthy.

“The RTE Act ensured that all children between the ages of 6 and 14 receive free and compulsory education. Despite repeated deadlines, the implementation of the RTE law remained unsatisfactory. Only 12.7% of schools learn to obey the provisions of the law. The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated closure of schools for almost a year can lead to increased dropout rates, child labor and human trafficking, all of which impact the school education scenario, ”he said.

Prof. Murthy said it had become important to strengthen children’s rights protected by the RTE law and to hold the state accountable for its responsibilities. It is equally important to raise awareness and motivate people through a national mass campaign to reclaim the right to education, he said.

RTE Southern Forum Steering Committee member Narava Prakasa Rao, Journalism and Mass Communication Research Scientist Shanmukha Rao, was present.
