The chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Congress minority cell Shahanwaz Alam was arrested by the Lucknow police on Monday for his alleged involvement in the anti-CAA violence which took place in December last year.

A CCTV video is also being circulated by Congress leaders which shows cops taking away a person from outside an apartment close to the chief minister’s residence in a police vehicle, who according to them is Shahanwaz.

Issuing a statement, DCP central Dinesh Singh confirmed that Shahanwaz was arrested for involvement in the anti-CAA protest which took place on December 19, 2019 in Lucknow. He has been arrested after the police gathered evidence against him.

Meanwhile, UP Congress chief Ajay Lallu and state Congress legislative party leader Aradhna Mishra along with the party workers reached the Hazratganj police station to enquire about the cops action against the party leader and two other people.

The Congress leaders also had an argument with senior cops at the police station.

The party leaders also alleged that the police resorted to lathicharge to disperse Congress workers.

Speaking to India Today, UP Congress spokesperson Ashok Singh said, “Shahanwaz, his driver and a party worker were picked up by the police on Monday late evening. However, the police arrested Shahanwaz and released the other two people. The cops also impounded a vehicle. This government is behaving like an autocrat and is unnecessarily targeting Congress leaders and workers who are exposing the wrong doings of the state government.”

“The party earlier booked our state president Ajay Lallu under false charges and now other leaders are being targeted. However our voice cannot be muzzled and we will continue to fight for the rights of migrant workers and deprived,” he added.

“Our party workers who gathered at the police station to enquire about the Shahanwaz illegal arrest were also lathicharged by the police,” claimed the Congress spokesperson.
